Speaker Detail:
Dr. Mats Karlsson is a Professor of Pharmacometrics at Uppsala University, Sweden, with a PhD in Pharmacokinetics and postdoctoral and sabbatical visits to University of Glasgow, UCSF, Georgetown University and Auckland University.
Dr. Karlsson's research focuses on pharmacometric models. Such models describe data, generally the response-time profiles observed in a clinical trial, by a basic model, accounting for the general structure of the underlying physiological/pharmacological system, and variability components, accounting for between and within subject variability. His research can be divided into four main areas. First, development of methods for efficient and robust model building. The result of this research has also been made available as widely used free software. Secondly, models are being developed for the use in specific therapeutic areas or for particular therapeutic/pharmacological principles. The third research area concerns utilization of the developed models for the purpose of designing studies, deciding upon dosing strategies and other developmental decisions. The final research focus includes analyses of dose-concentration-response data from trials to understand therapies with existing drugs with the aim of allowing improved therapy.
Within his areas of focus, he has published >300 peer-reviewed articles and supervised >60 PhD-students to their degree. He has received awards and honors from ACCP, ACOP, ASCPT, EUFEPS, ISoP, PKUK, the Swedish Government, Uppsala University and the Royal Society of Sciences.
Dr. Karlsson's presentation at Boston QSP event on September 20 will be titled "The full random effects model for covariate modeling – theory and practice."
