The distinguished speaker for the event was Dr. Joseph Lehar, executive director of computational biology at Merck Research Laboratories. The title of his talk was “Exploring systems biology and precision medicine at scale.” The event was moderated by one of the Boston QSP advisors, Dr. Kostas Biliouris, Principal Pharmacometrics Scientist, Pharmacometrics Liaison for Neuroscience, Novartis.
Dr. Lehar has had a wide-ranging experience throughout his career that spans from academia to industry and startup to big-pharma. His presentation included some of the work in the areas of systems biology and translational precision medicine at Verily, Novartis, and CombinatoRx, in collaboration with the Broad Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Boston University.
The focus of his presentation was on areas of innovation including: using drug combinations as probes of biological systems; applying in-vitro and in-vivo models in systematic perturbation experiments; and using deep learning to extend integrative models or accelerate clinical decision making. He concluded the presentation with his thoughts on promising areas for developing systems biology. A public version of Dr. Lehar's slides can be found here.
